JustOurBlock ("we," "us," or "our") operates the justourblock.com website and the JustOurBlock mobile application (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your personal information.
1. Data We Collect
We collect the following categories of personal data:
Contact Information
- Name — provided at signup. Used to identify you to your block neighbors.
- Email address — provided at signup. Used for authentication, notifications, and account recovery.
- Phone number — optionally provided in your profile. Shared with your block neighbors only.
Location Data
- Street address — provided in your profile. Used to place your pin on the block map and display in the neighbor directory. Geocoded via Mapbox to obtain coordinates.
User Content
- Posts and replies — messages you write on your block's message board.
- Profile information — birthday, bio, kids, and pets you choose to share.
- Profile photo — if you upload one, stored via Vercel Blob storage.
- Email blasts — messages you send to your block via the email feature.
Account Data
- Password — stored as a one-way bcrypt hash. We never store or see your plain-text password.
- Block membership — which blocks you belong to, your role (admin/member), and membership status.
2. How We Use Your Data
All data is collected and used solely for app functionality:
- Authentication — to sign you in and secure your account.
- App functionality — to display the neighbor directory, message board, and map to your block members.
- Notifications — to send email notifications for new posts, replies, invitations, and account-related events (password resets, trial reminders).
- Geocoding — to convert your street address to map coordinates via the Mapbox API.
- Payment processing — if you subscribe, Stripe processes your payment. We store your Stripe customer ID but never your credit card number.
3. Data Sharing
Your personal information is shared only in these limited ways:
- With your block neighbors — your name, address, phone, kids, pets, bio, and posts are visible to approved members of your block(s). This is the core purpose of the app.
- Service providers — we use the following third-party services to operate the app:
- Mapbox — geocoding addresses to map coordinates
- Resend — sending transactional emails
- Stripe — payment processing
- Vercel — hosting and file storage (profile photos)
- Neon — database hosting
- Sentry — error monitoring (no personal data sent)
- Plausible — privacy-friendly web analytics (no cookies, no personal data)
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not serve ads. We do not use your data for tracking or profiling.
4. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days. Message board posts and replies you authored may be anonymized (author removed) rather than deleted to preserve conversation context for other block members.
5. Data Security
We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), hashed passwords (bcrypt), and secure authentication tokens. Our database is hosted on Neon with encryption at rest. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data (visible in your profile at any time).
- Correct your data by editing your profile.
- Delete your account and associated data by contacting us.
- Export your data by contacting us.
- Opt out of email notifications via your profile settings.
7. Children's Privacy
JustOurBlock is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
8. Email Communications
We send transactional emails including: new post notifications, reply notifications, invitation emails, password reset emails, trial reminder emails, and weekly activity digests. You can disable post and reply notifications in your profile settings. Account-related emails (password reset, billing) cannot be disabled.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the effective date. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
